TAFU’s Health and Safety Guidance

Before any clean-up, remember, that responsibility starts at home! Be responsible for yourself, your family, your friends, and the environment, in that order. To this end, we provide below a set of guidelines to help everyone take responsibility for their environment in a responsible manner.

  • (maybe to organise the list below in that order?)
  • Always wear protective gear – good strong shoes or boots, a litter picker and reusable gloves
  • Never do a clean-up on your own, be at least two of you, if not more
  • Wash and/or sanitise your hands as often as possible
  • Wash your hands when you take your gloves off
  • Always, always, always wash your hands thoroughly before eating snacks or food – better yet, do not eat during a clean-up
  • Always have a fully charged phone with you in case of emergencies
  • Always let someone know where you are going and by when you should be back
  • Wear visible clothing, such as high visibility vests and bright clothing
  • Be accordingly dressed, with strong shoes or boots, long-sleeved tops and trousers
  • Never go near cliffs or bodies of water
  • Never enter waters on your clean up
  • Never touch sharp objects
  • Stay away from strangers
  • Always stay away from roads
  • Don’t clean up at dawn, dusk or during the night
  • Never lift anything too heavy
  • Be careful on wet surfaces and ice
  • Always leave places that are difficult or dangerous to reach to professionals, call and inform the local authorities, or inform us and we will call them on your behalf
  • Never do a clean-up in bad weather
  • Notify a local authority or us if there are any contaminated sites
  • Do not ever confront anybody who is littering
  • We strongly advise groups and organisations to check their insurance, before organising their own clean-ups
  • Always choose safe sites
  • If you go into a forest or wood wear insect repellents, if you are in the sun wear sun cream and a hat, for other locations and events always be dressed and equipped appropriately for your health and safety and that of others around you must be your first and primary concern.
  • Drink enough water, and make sure you always take a bottle of clean water with you
  • In case of any kind of accident always call professionals
  • And last but not least PLEASE make sure not to disturb wildlife, never touch wild animals or destroy any plants

TAFU is not responsible for any damage or injuries that might happen during your clean-ups, TAFU is an educational Nature Conservation organisation that promotes personal responsibility of each and every one of us towards nature, which includes us human beings, so the health and safety of every individual must be paramount at all time to everyone.
