TAFU Geoscience
Making geoscience part of the bigger picture.
TAFU’s geoscience projects help young people understand the Earth – not just as a subject, but as something connected to climate, justice, and the future. We don’t treat geology as an add-on. It’s part of the story we’re telling.
Why Geology Matters (and is so fascinating!)
Geoscience explains how the planet works, and how it’s changing. It’s part of understanding climate, energy, water, food systems, risk, and how the planet we now share formed and is evolving. It shows up in everything from flooding to fossil fuels, and it’s often overlooked.
Geoscience gives us a way to see the world as a whole, rather than separate systems. Geology has been the base for life, for humanity, and for all the advancements we made!
No matter what field you plan to be in or are in, geology plays a role in it, and at the very least is worth understanding if not diving into!
This isn’t about turning everyone into a geologist, though we do hope this will encourage many to join the field 😊. It’s about making sure we all understand geoscience, spot patterns, think longer-term, and see the world as a single system that has to be kept in balance.
Competition and challenges (coming soon)
We’re designing an online competition that:
- Explore geological topics; from volcanoes to fossils, and ancient climate to land mapping
- Link geology to sustainability, climate action, and responsible resource use
- Encourage different ways of thinking, not just correct answers
- Explore ways in which novel technology can be used in geoscience
The focus is on clarity, originality, and seeing connections; not how much you already know.
We are also designing fun and engages challenges for all ages and experience levels!
Talks
We run geoscience talks on various topics with professionals from around the world including:
- Volcanoes, fossils, earth systems, plate tectonics, and more
- Geoscience links with climate, energy, and conservation
- Careers and opportunities – especially for young people who haven’t considered geoscience before
Youth Geoscience Ambassadors
This new programme supports young people who want to:
- Build skills in geoscience communication and outreach
- Represent TAFU in events, challenges, and online content
- Help shape how geoscience is presented to others
- Gain mentorship from either Nika, our founder and young geologist, or another geologist!
It’s all about promoting geology to others and growing at the same time!
Our very first Youth Geoscience Ambassador is Emily Dawes, who is also our geoscience outreach coordinator and Nika’s mentee!!
