Nuthatch

As part of the countdown to TAFU’s Local Wildlife Day on the 11th of July – Species no. 6.

Stay tuned – 37 more days and 37 more species until then!

The Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a small, distinctive bird known for its blue-grey upper-parts, white face, and rusty orange underbelly. It is often spotted zigzagging up and down tree trunks and branches in search of insects and seeds, a behaviour unique among birds in the UK. They are highly territorial and live in deciduous woodlands, parks, and gardens across England, Wales, and more recently southern Scotland.

Nuthatches are identifiable by their bold black eye stripe and powerful, straight bill. They are non-migratory, typically staying close to their hatching area throughout their lives. Despite their sedentary nature, they are a delightful and energetic presence in wooded environments, known for their loud, whistling calls.
